日本語の「〜かどうか」は、英語で if または whether を使って表せます。I wonder if ... と I wonder whether ... の両方が使える場面は多い一方、whether or not や whether to ... では whether を選びます。また、条件の「もし」と同じ if でも役割が違います。この記事では、答えが yes か no になる内容を見分け、二つの共通点と使える位置の違いを整理します。
基本ルール
know、ask、wonder などの後ろでは、if + 主語 + 動詞 または whether + 主語 + 動詞 が「〜かどうか」を表せる場合があります。I wonder if Sora needs this dictionary. は「ソラがこの辞書を必要としているかどうか気になります」です。
この節が表す内容は、基本的に yes か no で答えられる疑問です。Is the music room free? という直接の疑問を文の一部に入れると、Please ask whether the music room is free. となります。節内は疑問文の is the music room ではなく、肯定文と同じ the music room is の語順です。
whether と if のどちらも使える例は、I don't know whether Ken is home. と I don't know if Ken is home. です。どちらも「ケンが家にいるかどうか分かりません」です。日常会話では if がよく使われ、whether はやや改まった響きになる場合があります。
or not を接続詞の直後へ置く標準的な形では、whether or not を使います。I don't know whether or not the pool is open. が正しく、if or not とはしません。or not を節の最後へ置く場合は、I don't know if the pool is open or not. も使えます。
「〜するかどうか」「〜すべきか」を to 不定詞で短くまとめるときは、whether to + 動詞の原形 を使います。We have not decided whether to go. は「私たちは行くかどうか決めていません」です。if to go とはしません。
whether は前置詞の後ろなど、if より広い位置で使えます。It depends on whether the weather improves. は「天候が回復するかどうかによります」です。初級では、どちらも可能な目的語節と、whether を選ぶ決まった形を分けて覚えます。
作り方・使い方
まず元の疑問が yes か no で答えられるか確認します。Does Aya know the answer? なら、答えは yes または no です。これを「アヤが答えを知っているかどうか尋ねてください」にすると、Please ask if Aya knows the answer. とできます。
節に入れたら疑問文の語順を戻します。Is the shop open? は、I wonder whether the shop is open. になります。whether is the shop open ではありません。節の主語 the shop を動詞 is の前に置きます。
選択肢をはっきり示したいときは whether or not を使えます。Please tell me whether or not you can come. は「来られるかどうか教えてください」です。or not が肯定と否定の二つの可能性を明示します。
次に動作そのものを選ぶなら whether to です。Yui cannot decide whether to buy the red bag. は「ユイは赤いかばんを買うかどうか決められません」です。動作をする人は文脈から Yui と分かり、to の後ろは原形 buy です。
見直しでは、「かどうか」の節か、条件の「もし」かを先に区別します。次に節内が肯定文の語順かを見ます。最後に or not が直後にあるか、to不定詞が続くか、前置詞の後ろかを確認し、その場合は whether を選びます。
例文
Please ask whether the music room is free. は「音楽室が空いているかどうか尋ねてください」です。yesかnoで答えられる内容を whether 節が表し、節内は the music room is の順です。
I wonder if Sora needs this dictionary. は「ソラがこの辞書を必要としているかどうか気になります」です。wonder の後ろの目的語節で、ここでは whether に替えることもできます。
We do not know whether or not the game will start on time. は「試合が時間どおり始まるかどうか分かりません」です。or not を接続詞の直後へ置くため whether を使っています。
Ken is thinking about whether to join the club. は「ケンはその部に入るかどうか考えています」です。前置詞 about の後ろで、さらに whether to join の形を使っています。
I asked if the bus stopped near the museum. は「そのバスが博物館の近くに止まるかどうか尋ねました」です。if は条件ではなく、尋ねたyesかnoの内容を導いています。
よくある間違い
誤りの I don't know if or not the pool is open. は、or not を if の直後へ置いています。正しくは I don't know whether or not the pool is open. です。この位置では whether or not を使います。
誤りの We have not decided if to go. は、if の後ろにto不定詞を置いています。正しくは We have not decided whether to go. です。「行くかどうか」を短く表す決まった形です。
誤りの I wonder whether is Ken at home. は、直接疑問文の語順を節内に残しています。正しくは I wonder whether Ken is at home. です。whether の後ろは 主語 + 動詞 にします。
If it rains, we will stay home. の if は「雨が降るかどうか」ではなく「もし雨が降れば」という条件です。一方、I don't know if it will rain. は「雨が降るかどうか」です。どちらも文法的ですが、前の動詞と主節との関係から役割を区別します。
